The Department of Posts, Ministry of Communications, Government of India has released the Gramin Dak Sevak (GDS) Online Engagement Notification, Schedule-II, July 2026.
Applications are invited from eligible candidates for engagement to the posts of Branch Postmaster (BPM), Assistant Branch Postmaster (ABPM) and Dak Sevak in various offices of the Department of Posts.
The vacancy details are provided Circle/Division-wise in Annexure-I and on the GDS Online Engagement Portal.

๐ฎ India Post GDS Vacancy 2026
The recruitment covers vacant GDS posts in different Circles and Divisions of the Department of Posts.
The posts include:
- Branch Postmaster (BPM)
- Assistant Branch Postmaster (ABPM)
- Dak Sevak

๐จโ๐ผ GDS Post Details & Job Profile
1. Branch Postmaster (BPM)
The BPM is responsible for the day-to-day functioning of the Branch Post Office and India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) operations.
Main Duties
- Manage day-to-day postal operations of the Branch Office.
- Handle IPPB-related operations.
- Promote and market Department of Posts products and services.
- Operate Customer Service Centres (CSC), where applicable.
- In single-handed Branch Offices, take overall responsibility for smooth and timely functioning, including mail conveyance and delivery.
- Perform duties of ABPM when required.
- Carry out other duties assigned by senior postal officers.
Residence Requirement
A selected BPM must arrange accommodation for the Branch Post Office at their own cost and must reside in the post village where the Branch Office is functioning.
2. Assistant Branch Postmaster (ABPM)
Main Duties
- Sale of stamps and stationery.
- Conveyance and doorstep delivery of mail.
- Exchange of mail with the Account Office.
- IPPB deposits, payments and other transactions.
- Assist the BPM in postal operations.
- Marketing and promotion of postal products and services.
- Operate Customer Service Centres, where applicable.
- Perform BPM duties when ordered or when the BPM is unavailable.
- Carry out other duties assigned by senior officers.
ABPMs are required to reside within the delivery jurisdiction of the concerned Branch Office.

3. Dak Sevak
Dak Sevaks may be engaged in Post Offices, Sorting Offices, Mail Offices, Transit Mail Offices, Delivery Centres or other offices of the Department.
Main Duties
- Sale of stamps and stationery.
- Conveyance and delivery of mail.
- Deposits, payments and other IPPB transactions.
- Handling of mail, mail bags and parcels.
- Transhipment of mail bags.
- Delivery of mail and parcels.
- Assistance in the smooth functioning of Post Offices.
- Marketing and business procurement activities.
- Other duties assigned by postal officers.
Dak Sevaks are required to reside within the delivery jurisdiction of the Post Office to which they are attached.
๐ฐ India Post GDS Salary 2026
GDS personnel are paid Time Related Continuity Allowance (TRCA).

TRCA carries an annual increase of 3%, subject to the conditions prescribed under the GDS Rules.
GDS personnel are also entitled to Dearness Allowance and certain other allowances and social security benefits, including GDS Gratuity and the Service Discharge Benefit Scheme, as applicable under the rules.
Important
GDS personnel are not regular employees of the Department/Central Government, and their emoluments and other entitlements are not at par with regular Central Government employees. Their service conditions are governed by the GDS (Conduct and Engagement) Rules, 2020, as revised from time to time.
๐ Educational Qualification
Candidates must have passed the Secondary School Examination (10th Standard) with passing marks in:
- Mathematics
- English
The qualification must be from a recognized Board of School Education established by the Government of India, State Governments or Union Territories.
Candidates possessing an equivalent qualification from another board are not eligible according to the notification.
๐ฃ๏ธ Local Language Requirement
The candidate must have studied the prescribed local language up to at least the 10th Standard from a recognized board.
The prescribed local language depends on the Postal Circle and the particular area/post.

The prescribed age limit for GDS engagement is:
- Minimum Age: 18 years
- Maximum Age: 40 years
Age will be calculated as on the last date of submission of applications.

The selected candidates are required to submit the prescribed undertakings relating to these requirements at the time of engagement.
๐ณ Application Fee
The application fee is:

However, the application fee is exempted for:
- All female applicants
- SC applicants
- ST applicants
- PwBD applicants
- Transwomen applicants
Applicants who are required to pay the fee can pay through available online modes, including Credit Card, Debit Card, Net Banking and UPI.
The fee, once paid, is non-refundable.
๐ Selection Process
The selection of GDS candidates is based on a system-generated merit list.
Merit List
The merit list is prepared on the basis of marks obtained in the Secondary School Examination (10th Standard).
Marks are aggregated to percentage with accuracy up to four decimal places.
No Written Examination
The notification’s selection criteria are based on the 10th-standard merit list; there is no separate written examination described as part of the GDS selection process.
๐ Grade / CGPA Conversion
Where candidates have grades instead of marks, the Department will apply the prescribed conversion methodology.
For grades, the multiplication factor is 9.5.

Where CGPA is provided, marks are calculated by multiplying the CGPA by 9.5, subject to the conditions in the notification.
๐ Division Selection & Post Preference
A candidate can apply for one or more vacant GDS posts within one selected Division.
After selecting the Division, the system will display eligible posts based on factors including:
- Community/category
- Age
- PwBD status
- Local language studied
Candidates must provide preferences for the posts they wish to be considered for.
A candidate will not be considered for a post for which no preference has been indicated.
If a candidate is shortlisted for more than one post, only one post will be offered according to the applicable preference order, and rights over the other posts will be forfeited.

Applications containing blurred or illegible photographs/signatures may be rejected.
๐ฅ๏ธ How to Apply for India Post GDS Recruitment 2026
Candidates must apply online only through the official GDS Online Engagement Portal.
Step 1 โ One-Time Registration
- Visit the GDS Online Engagement Portal.
- Click Candidate Login/Register.
- Select New Candidate Registration.
- Enter an active mobile number and email ID.
- Verify the mobile number and email through OTP.
- Enter personal and matriculation details.
- Create the required password.
- Complete registration and obtain the unique Registration Number.
Only one registration is permitted per candidate. Duplicate or multiple registrations are prohibited.
Step 2 โ Online Application
- Log in using the Registration Number and password.
- Click the Apply Online option under the active GDS notification.
- Enter educational/10th-standard details.
- Select the eligible Division.
- Choose post preferences.
- Upload the photograph and signature.
- Preview the application.
- Pay the application fee, if applicable.
- Submit the application.
- Save/print the submitted application for future reference.
๐ Application Correction Window
A two-day correction window will be available from 23 September to 24 September 2026.
Candidates may modify eligible details during this period according to the conditions specified in the notification.
After the correction window closes, no further correction or modification will be allowed.
๐ Document Verification
Shortlisted candidates will be informed through the GDS Online Engagement Portal, SMS and email.
Shortlisted candidates must report to the designated Divisional/Unit Head for physical verification of documents within 15 days from the date of shortlisting.
Candidates must carry original documents and two sets of self-attested photocopies, as applicable.
Documents may include:
- 10th/SSC marksheet
- Identity proof
- Caste certificate
- PwBD certificate
- EWS certificate
- Transgender certificate
- Date of Birth proof
- Mandatory medical certificate
- Relevant local/tribal language certificate, where applicable
๐ Important Service Conditions
Candidates should carefully note that:
- GDS personnel generally serve in rural areas.
- GDS engagement is not the same as regular Central Government employment.
- GDS personnel ordinarily work for a minimum of 4 hours and maximum of 5 hours per day.
- A GDS cannot be retained as Sevak beyond 65 years of age.
- A GDS should have another source of income for adequate means of livelihood.
- BPM candidates must arrange accommodation for the Branch Post Office at their own cost.

- Only one registration is permitted per candidate.
- Duplicate/multiple applications can lead to cancellation of candidature.
- Candidates must enter their name, date of birth, father’s name, mother’s name and other details exactly as recorded in the 10th-standard marksheet.

- Blurred or illegible photographs/signatures may lead to rejection.
- Candidates should regularly visit the official portal for updates.
- Past experience or previous service of any kind will not be considered for selection.
